South Carolina Spartanburg County Lyman
Lyman is located in
Spartanburg County. The town got its start in the 1870s as farming community known as Groce's Stop, for the local general store.
In the 1920s Pacific Mills purchased over 700 acres from the Groce family and built, what was at the time, the company's largest textile mill. Over the next few years, Pacific Mills expanded their operation and built a village of 375 homes for mill workers.
During this prosperous time, the town's name became Lyman, in memory of a former President of Pacific Mills.
