January 27, 1988 – Jean H. Toal became the first woman ever to be elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court
June 7, 1988 – The General Assembly passed the Beachfront Management Act to control coastal development
September 21-22, 1989 – Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina
May 30, 1990 – President of the University of South Carolina James B. Holderman resigned amidst charges that he misspent USC funds
July 18, 1990 – Operation Lost Trust began to unfold with the US Attorney for South Carolina's announcement that several South Carolina legislators were under investigation for receiving bribes or using drugs
August 24, 1990 – South Carolina reserve and National Guard units were activated in support of Operation Desert Shield

1991 – Governor Campbell appointed a citizen's panel to make recommendations on state government reform
1991 – South Carolina's last major independent bank, the South Carolina National Bank, merged with Wachovia Bank of Winston-Salem, NC
December 21, 1992 – Former Governor Richard Riley was appointed US Secretary of Education
1994 – Governor Campbell signed the South Carolina School-to-Work Transition Act

Campbell managed the campaign of the first Republican to be elected mayor of Greenville
Campbell attended night classes in political science while a US Representative

Although Daniel received fewer than 50% of the votes in the Democratic primary, he was declared the official nominee when none of the other Democratic candidates requested a runoff.
