South Carolina Waterfalls – Escape to the Upstate with SCIwayPrevious Issues of SCIWAY News In This IssueSouth Carolina WaterfallsSouth Carolina is home to some of the Southeast's most stunningly beautiful waterfalls and cascades. They spill over glossy granite walls, plunge hundreds of feet down rocky cliffs, and barrel down boulder-strewn whitewater rivers.
Many people – even natives – may be surprised to learn just how many waterfalls exist along South Carolina's rivers and creeks. (The answer? Well over 30!) Our coastal towns serve as popular places to escape the summertime swelter, but a refreshing dive into a cool waterfall plunge pool is one of our state's secret escapes. Beaches are crowded during the summer tourist season, but tranquility can still be found in our Upstate wilderness. There are numerous trails leading to these waterfalls, some journeying through our popular state parks. The trails range from easy river strolls to more strenuous overnight forest hikes. In our gallery, we link to detailed directions to help you get started on your adventure. For those of you who want to visit these natural wonders from the comfort of your desk, we feature beautiful photographs and even a few videos. You will also find anecdotes from fellow South Carolinians who have visited the falls. It's important to note that most waterfalls in our state are best viewed after a good rainstorm. Also, SCIWAY's gallery is not a comprehensive list of waterfalls in South Carolina, since there are several for which we don't yet have photos. If you have a picture to share of a waterfall we're missing, or if you have a story or some helpful advice about a waterfall we do have, please write service@sciway.net.
