- March 5, 1897 – The General Assembly passed legislation establishing a state income tax
- February 19, 1898 – The General Assembly created a new law requiring South Carolina railroads to maintain separate coaches for whites and blacks
- November 8, 1898 – One white and seven blacks were killed in a race riot in Greenwood County on election day
