South Carolina Hampton County Varnville
Varnville is located in
Hampton County. In 1860, the area was an unincorporated village known by the name of Dixie.
In 1870 railroad tracks for the Port Royal & Augusta Railroad were laid along the northern edge of the small community. James Varn and his brother, Reverend Berry Varn, owned a sawmill north of the tracks. They sold their right of way to the railroad and the town soon expanded across the tracks. A post office was established in 1872 and the town took the Varn brothers' name
Hampton is the largest city near Varnville.
