South Carolina York County Tega Cay
Tega Cay was built in 1970 as a gated community on
Lake Wylie in
York County. The name is Polynesian and means "beautiful peninsula."
As a private community, residents of Tega Cay paid a monthly assessment fee to a development company who arranged for services such as water and sewer, garbage collection, and security. In the early 1980s, residents chose to incorporate as a town in order to protect their interests from the developer's financial problems.
Today, the town has its own police department and children attend school in nearby
Fort Mill. Residents enjoy their lake-side location, tennis courts, walking trailing, and a 27-hole golf course.
