South Carolina Beaufort County Parris Island
Parris Island is a
Marine Corps Recruit Depot located in
Beaufort County. The first Marines were stationed here in 1891. The base expanded significantly in 1929 when a causeway and bridge granted access to the island by car and again during WWII. Between 1941 and 1945, over 200,000 Marines received combat training at Parris Island.
A special training battalion for female recruits was established in 1949 and remains the sole training assignment for women in today's Marine Corps. Around 18,000 male and female recruits are trained each year at Parris Island.
