Oates, South Carolina

South Carolina Darlington County Oates Oates is located in the southeastern portion of Darlington County about halfway between Hartsville and Lamar.

The town was founded in the early 1800s when James Oates bought land and settled here. The area became attractive as a place for others to settle when James' son, William, opened a popular general store. When a post officewas established in 1880, the town was named for the influential Oates family.
