Mayesville is located in 
Sumter County just 10 miles northwest of the City of 
Sumter.
 
Mary McLeod Bethune, born in Mayesville in 1875 to former slaves, was a famous proponent of education as a way out of poverty, especially for African-American women. In 1935 she founded the National Council for Negro Women and her advice on education and minority affairs was sought out by Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, and Roosevelt.
