South Carolina Florence County Johnsonville
Johnsonville is located in the far southeastern portion of
Florence County. The city took its name from the Johnson family, who first gained prominence as landowners in the early 19th century. Later, the Johnsons owned the ferry that crossed the Lynches River.
In the years just prior to the
Civil War, Johnson's Ferry was the place where the stagecoach stopped to change horses. While the stagecoach traveled across the Lynches River, the ferry pilot signaled the number of passengers with a fox horn – one blast for each passenger, thus informing Mrs. Johnson of the number of places she should set for dinner. The passengers ate during the change of horses, and then reboarded the stagecoach to continue their journey.
