Irmo is located in the Midlands of South Carolina, just 12 miles northwest of
Columbia along I-26. Each September the town hosts the annual Irmo Okra Strut, a two-day okra celebration featuring a street dance, parade, and an okra eating contest!
The heart of downtown Irmo is the Irmo Town Park, which features walking paths, a gazebo, and an amphitheater for summer concerts. Just minutes from the park you'll find a great selection of shops and
restaurants.
Located just outside the city along the banks of the
Saluda River, Saluda Shoals Park provides visitors with an abundance of recreational opportunities, including some of the state's best kayaking. This 400-acre regional park boasts picnic shelters, boat ramps, and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
In the late 1800s Irmo was a thriving community next to new railroad tracks that ran along the high ridge between the Broad and Saluda Rivers. The town's name was formed by combining the first two letters of the names of two railroad company men – C. J. Iredell and H. C. Moseley.
Irmo is located in both
