Hemingway, South Carolina

South Carolina Williamsburg County Hemingway Hemingway is located in the northeastern portion of Williamsburg County. Until the turn of the 20th century, it was a small crossroads known as Lamberts.

Then, in the early 1900s, Dr. W. C. Hemingway sold a portion of his land to Seaboard Air Line Railroad. The railroad built a depot, and the crossroads grew into a market center for local crops – first cotton and later tobacco. The town adopted Dr. Hemingway's name.

During the Revolutionary War, the area served as a hidden base camp for General Francis Marion, the legendary "Swamp Fox." In modern times, Hemingway served as the home of Tupperware's global distribution center from the late 1970s until 2024.

Each April the town hosts the Bar-B-Q Shag Festival. This weekend event features a barbecue cook-off and plenty of shagging in the streets. The shag, if you don't already know, is the official state dance of South Carolina.

Kingstree, the seat of Williamsburg County, is the largest town near Hemingway. Here is a map of the Kingstree area.
