South Carolina Berkeley County Hanahan
Hanahan is located in southern
Berkeley County, just across the
Charleston County line from the City of
North Charleston. The historic house from the 18th-century indigo plantation
Otranto still stands in a Hanahan residential neighborhood. In its early years, the plantation was owned by members of familiar Lowcountry families including the Middletons and Moultries.
In the 1970s, when the property was being developed into a subdivision, three brick vat systems that were used to process indigo in the late 1700s were excavated. A local dye manufacturing company recognized the historical significance of the artifacts, purchased them, and relocated them to their plant in nearby
Goose Creek where they are on display.
North Charleston is the largest city near Hanahan. Goose Creek is the most populous nearby city in Berkeley County. Here are maps of the
Charleston area and of the
Goose Creek area.
