South Carolina Orangeburg County Cope
Cope is located in
Orangeburg County, southwest of the City of
Orangeburg.
It is named for Jacob Martin Cope, a
Barnwell County farmer who, in the 1890s, sold a portion of his land for the town and a train depot. Within a year or two, Cope had two churches, several shops, a grist mill, a cotton gin, and a planing mill – proof of how essential railroads were to growth in this area of the state.
Cope's train depot still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
