Cheraw area.
While an official Cheraw resolution designates the town's pronunciation "chuh-RAW," many people seem to be divided about the proper way to say this name, with lots of folks saying "shuh-RAW" instead. (
See the results of our poll.) In deference to this ongoing debate, here at SCIWAY we lovingly refer to the town as "Cheraw-Sheraw."
Jazz great Dizzy Gillespie was born in Cheraw in 1917. Considered to be one of the founders of modern jazz, he is remembered for his humor, bent trumpet, and bulging cheeks. He was honored by Kennedy Center for his contributions to the performing arts and received the National Medal of the Arts award in 1990.
