Due West, South Carolina – Erskine College Observatory
|
This photo of the Erskine College observatory and clock tower was taken by Davey Morgan in September 2006. Erskine College is located in Due West, which is in Abbeville County.
Davey writes: "The original 1849 Henry Fitz Refracting Telescope that was in the observatory until the end of the 19th century, now sits in a glass case in the State Museum in Columbia. The telescope was designed by America's first commercial telescope maker Henry Fitz (1808-1863). Charles Edwards (Erskine College, Class of 1930) wrote the Erskine Alma Mater that includes a line about the towers, "the towers that point to heaven".
