Columbia, South Carolina – Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
|
A clear winter sky backdrops the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia. The photo was taken by Kathryn Harris of Hixson, Tennessee in January 2008. Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is located at the corner of Gervais Street and Sumter Street in downtown Columbia. It was founded in 1812 and the building was dedicated in 1814.
Kathryn writes: "I really enjoyed walking in the churchyard looking at the gravestones and seeing the inside of the church. It really is beautiful and a must see when in Columbia. This was my first visit and this was one thing I had to see while there. The State Capitol is across the street from the church."
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral was spared in Sherman's March in 1865 that destroyed a third of Columbia. Most of the buildings around it burned down, but the church survived.
