Columbia, South Carolina – State Capitol Dome
|
This nighttime shot of our state capitol in Columbia was taken by Steven Faucette of Williamston in January 2008. The South Carolina state capitol building took 56 years to complete, from 1854 to 1907. The Civil War, along with corruption, lack of funds, and political bickering, interrupted the construction on several occasions. It is our second state house in Columbia, the first destroyed by fire in Sherman's March of 1865.
Steven writes: "The statehouse is just one of many buildings in downtown Columbia rich with history and beauty."
For a history of the building and its grounds visit the South Carolina State House, which includes a virtual tour.
Be sure to also check out Steven Faucette Photography to browse and buy prints of Steve's work.
